Winter is here, and it’s time to think about taking care of your boat’s safety equipment, especially its steering. A quick and easy diagnosis can save you time on your next outing.

Step 1: Start by checking the colour of your oil. The easiest way to do this is at the steering pump filler cap behind the steering wheel. If you find that the oil is dark and dirty, we recommend to change the oil and then bleed the steering system completely. You can do this manually (manual bleeding video) or use the Speedy LS bleeder (Speedy purge bleeding video).

Step 2: Ensure to wipe carefully the various steering components (pump, cylinder, fittings) to detect any leaks. To do this, please check the oil level, then operate the steering (manually or electrically) and check that the oil level has not fallen.

An oil level drop is synonymous of a leak. It is essential to locate it visually. These leaks might be located close to the fittings or at the different sealing points (pump shaft seals, cylinder rod outlet seals).

If you find a leak close to a fitting, please retighten it in accordance with your product manual. Then check by repeating the operation in step 2.

If the leak persists or if you detect a leak at the sealing points (pump or cylinder), we advise you to contact a specialist (LS service-support).

Now you’re all set for the next season, but don’t forget to always have a pack of seals ready.
